Janine Carhart is a truly self-made woman.

Her Essex-based street furniture business Barriers Direct is on track to turnover of £2m this year, supplying everything from bollards to bicycle racks to businesses, home owners and local authorities across the country.

However, Carhart is the only person on the payroll because she has handed over everything she feels is not core to the operations – from manufacturing to finance and marketing functions – to external suppliers.

“Basically we are an outsourced company,” Carhart says, noting that this flexibility allows her not only to undercut her rivals by at least 15 per cent, but also to enjoy the freedom to operate from wherever she connects her laptop.

In fact, Carhart spends half of every month operating out of her second home in Sweden. “Wherever I have my computer, I can work,” she says.

Carhart’s focus on getting the maximum bang for her bucks may be influenced by her experiences before taking the jump into starting a business – having spent several years with the notoriously cost-concious budget airline Ryanair.

Carhart says she respects the achievements of Michael O’Leary, Ryanair’s chief executive, but stresses that she has managed to save her customer’s money without the negative commentary her former boss has received.

She is not alone. A number of owners of small, but fast-growing, businesses are now opting to build operations that outsource all but the core value-adding service.

Some of this trend is being driven by the recession, as established companies use third parties to help shave costs.

    <story>
If you are looking for a great value parking post the KYP1 is a great buy! It only comes in a bolt down option but has an integral lock near the top of the post to make securing it in place that little easier, particularly if you don't like bending for too long. It also comes in a bright yellow colour showing you have taken due care and attention to warn people you have a post in place.

Ideal for protecting your parking space or stopping people turning around in your driveway. (It is not strong enough to offer secure protection from ram raiding you will need to look for a post or telescopic post with the Sold Secure logo on our web site for that).

It does come with two keys as standard and requires 3 ground fixing bolts - 12mm (not included) to secure it in place. If you are buying more than one security post we can offer locks that are keyed alike. N.B. Bolts are not included.

    <story>
Barriers Direct has just launched their largest range of bike racks ever to ensure there are enough places to park up! World Bicycle production has risen dramatically in the last half century. Less than 20 million bikes were produced in 1950 a figure which rose to 60 million by 1980 and now stands at over 100 million and Barriers Direct now provides racks to suit every situation!

The new and innovative “Round Tree” cycle stand permits the creation of bike parking areas in unusual places, such as round a tree or pole. The larger racks are circular, while the smaller ones are square and both are supplied in two halves for easy assembly.

Barriers direct has been providing cycle parking solutions for many years and has put together a range to suite local authorities, architects, designers, commercial and industrial organisations, as well as solutions for the home.

A 15-minute bike ride to and from work five times a week burns off the equivalent of 11 pounds of fat in a year. Cycling is fast becoming one of the most popular forms of transport, with 3.1 million adults per month, in England, cycling at levels of intensity that are beneficial for their health. While cycling is keeping the population fit; it is also reducing carbon emissions!

Janine Carhart, Managing Director of Barriers Direct says: “Cycle stands are one the top sellers of all our security equipment, wall mounted stands being the most popular type. The Sheffield cycle stand has also now been recommended by the Cycling Touring Club (the UK's national cyclists' organization) too which is good news for cyclist – and hopefully more bike stands being around will persuade people to cycle instead of drive around their cities.”

    <story>
Taking a stand against bike theft…

According to the British Crime Survey, 440,000 bikes are stolen every year. With an estimated three million adults cycling in the UK everyday day since the inception of the government’s ‘Cycle England’ in 2005, this figure is hardly surprising.

David Cameron has, of course, been the latest highly publicised victim when he was out “buying salad” and on return found his chosen mode of transport was not there. The clear-up rate for catching bike thieves is about 5% according to the CTC, (National Cycling Association), and even Cameron knew not to pursue the peddle pushers who took off with his faithful steed. A spokesman for the Tory leader agreed that, “He knew it was only a petty crime,” he said “Police in that area have more pressing things to do.”

The few thieves that are caught face risible sentences as illustrated by the punishment received by Daniel Westrop, 28, who last year stole around 1347 bikes in six months and still was not put behind bars. The vast range of cycles he stole during the rampage, on which he often sold more than two bikes a day from various tube stations, was thought to be worth around £310,000. The criminal received 100 hours community service, an ASBO and £3000 damages to pay. A British Transport Police spokeswoman said after the case: “We are very disappointed with the sentence. We expected he would be jailed and feel the court decision has more to do with the national lack of prison places than the gravity of the offences.”

One of the main components thought to be contributing to this ever increasing problem is the lack of bike stands around the areas most commonly used by bicyclists. Many thieves target parks, side streets, cycle paths and city centres where, until now, stands have not been designed to be placed.

New types of bike stands are being designed against crime specifically for areas such as these, which previous designs have not catered for. The government have injected a further £140 million into making the UK a cycle-friendly nation which will hopefully ensure that these new stands will provide a safe-place in more remote locations where theft is rife.

Janine Carhart, managing director at Barriersdirect.co.uk, an online provider of secure fixtures, explains: “Cycle stands are one of the top sellers of all our security equipment, wall mounted stands being the most popular type. The Sheffield cycle stand has also now been recommended by the Cycling Touring Club (the UK's national cyclists' organisation) too which is good news for cyclist.”

According to Halifax Home Insurance a bike is stolen every 65 seconds; that is over 1329 bikes a day amounting to approximately 9304 a week and hotspots outside the capital include Reading, Bristol, Gloucester and Oxford.

BarriersDirect.co.uk are one of many companies on the right (cycle) track. They stock “round-tree” stands as well as wall mounts and other stands designed specifically to discourage thieves in less obvious areas. Janine Carhart also offers some words of wisdom for those having to leave bikes. “We strongly advise cyclists to lock both wheels and the frame to the stand if possible. Try and use a stand which supports the bike fully and prevents the front wheel from falling. Where possible, do not lock the tube of your bike to the stand as this makes a thieves’ life easy!”

With the effects of the fuel crisis pressing heavily on drivers to swap their four wheeled vehicles for two, it is time to make stand up against bike theft. If the Criminal Justice system hasn’t got the time or the resources to take this type of crime seriously, then the general public has to make a stand and lock up tight.

    <story>
Brits keep more than £3.6 billion worth of valuables in their cars, according to new research.

Radios, CD players and sat navs mean the average car has £106.04 of stuff left in it when it is parked up.

More than 38 per cent of people leave their phones in their car while almost a third don't bother to take their radio out.

Around 29 per cent even leave cash on show in their car and one in five store their golf clubs in the boot.

But drivers ought to be more careful as the poll, by security solution firm Barriers Direct, found that a massive 37 per cent of people have had their car broken into.

More than 12 per cent of those were hit by thieves within the last year.

And despite the rise in the number of people being attacked while confronting crooks, a brave 83 per cent of Brits would try and stop a thief if they spotted them trying to break into their car.

Another 62 would even try and stop a crook stealing things from a STRANGER'S car.

Not surprisingly, it's the radio that is taken the most, followed by cash and clothes, with the average cost of the stolen goods totalling £77.25.

However, rather than making people more concerned about car thieves, 16 per cent say they are actually LESS worried about leaving expensive items on show.

Worryingly, six per cent think their car is a perfectly safe place to leave valuable while four per cent even leave them visible on the seats

And while two thirds do store things well out of sight in the boot, seven per cent simply put them under the seats.

The poll, of 2,500 people also revealed 67 per cent think car crime in the UK is getting worse, with the average Brit knowing of two people who had their car broken into.

A spokesman for BarriersDirect.com said: "It's alarming how many people leave valuables in their cars, especially as the collective value adds up to so much."

"Yet there are simple security measures that can enable you to keep your gadgets in your vehicle. Car safes offer an affordable way to secure sat navs, mp3 players, mobile phones and small valuables so there's no excuse to leave valuables on show."

In an attempt to protect the car, Brits will spend an average of £70.31 making sure their car is secure with a quarter believing a car immobilizer is the most effective security method.

Another 22 per cent think the trusty car alarm is the best way to discourage the thieves.

However, a third of drivers think there needs to be more advice available on how to keep your car safe.
Top five valuables left in cars most often

Mobile phone

Radio

Cash

Keys

Mp3 player

Top five things stolen

Radio

Cash/clothes

Sports equipment

Credit/debit cards

Mobile phone

Car Safes

    <story>
Smokers are in for a shock next week if the weather forecast is anything to go by.

"We expected the next rush to be about September when the weather traditionally turns colder, but because of the miserable summer so far we have had to stock up earlier" said Outsidesmoking.co.uk Managing Director Janine Carhart.

Wall mounted ash trays are flying out the door, but people will still be open to the elements. I think there will be some personnel departments receiving requests and complaints if the cold and rain keep up after the 1st of July deadline.

Outsidesmoking.co.uk is a trading name of Barriersdirect.com. Smoking Shelters are priced from approx £1200 ex vat FREE DELIVERY Phone 0800 0288010.
